Located in Opelika’s historic Cotton Warehouse District, the Resting Pulse Brewery occupies the former warehouse no. 7, while the garden sits at the public corner of the district. The garden inhabits the remnants of a building that, prior to an immense fire, was once a slaughterhouse, car repair shop, and printing press for the local newspaper. The Brewery and Garden is imagined as an intentional extension of the local stories and rich histories of the place.
The design intentionally engages the physical traces of the structures. Recent brick layers are surgically removed to reveal textures and patinas of older brick patterns beneath. New layers of fencing and concrete are added to these, building up a diverse collection of walls with varying opacities. Resourceful materials of concrete, brick, and steel are employed in subtle ways, with each material adding to the layered tapestry of the site.
