The Student Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology was originally constructed in 1967. After decades of layered additions and alterations, Georgia Tech invited three teams to participate in a three-month Ideas Competition to holistically renovate and substantially expand the Campus Center. In a collaboration with BLDGS Architects, Mackey Mitchell, and DPR Construction, our team developed two distinct and complete approaches to test a range of ideas for the new campus center.
Both approaches reimagine the Campus Center precinct as an active, ecological, process-driven landscape; a landscape that dynamically changes through time; a landscape that immerses students in the wonders of the natural world, despite being located within the urban fabric of Atlanta. Seasonal flows of water, wildlife, seeds, and students are choreographed through the site to form a productive working landscape. Storm water from the campus is gathered and redirected to create immersive grottoes and richly vegetated seeps that sculpturally exaggerate Georgia Tech’s undulating topography. Deciduous trees are arranged according to the characteristics of their shade and dappled light, providing pockets of outdoor comfort throughout the seasons. These immersive landscapes continue to provide productive ecosystem services while offering students a much-needed break from the intensity of the classroom.
