Opelika’s Cotton Warehouse District was once a bustling hub of agricultural shipping, with a series of cotton warehouses serving as the economic center of the city in the 19th century. The 1st Avenue Corridor is a piece of a larger initiative to re-engage the Cotton Warehouse District as the historic warehouses are now being transformed into new local businesses and makerspaces. The corridor responds to this revitalization by reallocating road space to widen the pedestrian zone and create occupiable planting areas, resulting in a more vibrant and engaging streetscape that ties together the new businesses along the historic fabric of the district.
