In the heart of Montgomery, just over one mile from the Alabama State Capitol Building, lies a 250-acre tract of land containing wetlands, ancient river bluffs, natural seeps, and deep ravines. The biodiversity of this urban wild (a remnant natural system found within a developed urban area) offers a tremendous resource for ecological observation, hands-on learning, and public recreation.
Cypress Nature Preserve gets its name from Cypress Creek, the urban stream that begins in the surrounding neighborhoods and flows on to the Alabama River. At the heart of Cypress Nature Preserve stands the Tupelo Swamp, a cathedral-like wetland forest of water tupelo trees. Once complete, Cypress Nature Preserve will provide an outdoor environmental education facility and new outdoor recreational opportunities while promoting the environmental health of Montgomery by providing storm water retention, water filtration, air purification, and carbon sequestration.
