Tucked below the street within a forest of Southern Magnolias, this 1953 mid-century house was completely renovated to maintain the original intention of the house while heightening its relationship to the landscape. A narrow, winding footpath carves through the landscape, bobbing and weaving through the existing canopy, happening upon varied plant mixes strategically inserted into the ground plane layer. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by an entry court populated with mature, existing trees. Surrounding the backside of the house are a series of spaces calibrated to the owner’s desires for spaces to gather both privately and communally within the landscape. The spaces range from an intimate private patio off the music room shaded with a grove of black gum, a terraced container garden traversing the back slope, to a patio nestled among a mix of perennials ready to entertain.
